GREEN BAY, Wis. (WFRV) – Students with the Green Bay Area Public School District (GBAPS) are celebrating the completion of two houses they began constructing this past year.

The GBAPS has a Bridges Construction and Renovation program where students receive hands-on experience to prepare for a trades career. The program also assists neighborhoods that may be in need of repairs and new houses.

“It’s amazing,” stated Green Bay West High School Senior Nikki Xiong. “You can see that everything that was nothing, and now there’s walls and windows and everything that you need for a house and for safety. So it’s really amazing to see that we were all able to come together and build something wonderful.”

The new homes were built by students from Green Bay East, Green Bay West, and Preble High School where they also earned high school and college credit.

“It will help me more in the future, I feel like,” began Green Bay West High School Senior Thomas Erler. “I might go into [something like this] in the future but building my own house, renovating it myself, this [experience] will boost me a lot towards my future and help me grow as a person.

The program started back in 1917 and isn’t slowing down any time soon. Plans are already in the works to build two more houses next school year.
